After surviving an overtime scare against New Orleans in Week 1, the Detroit Lions hit the road for a short-week trip to Buffalo. Here's everything you need to know ahead of kickoff.

• Kickoff: 8:15 PM ET (1:15 AM UK time, into Friday)
• Venue: Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park, NY — the Bills' new home, hosting its first-ever regular-season game
• TV: Prime Video (US), with the game also airable on local affiliates in both markets

Highmark Stadium is an open-air venue, and at the time of writing there are expecting to be intermittent showers and a small change of thunderstorms.

The line

Buffalo opens as a home favourite, though the number has crept around during the week. Books have the Bills anywhere from -3 to -4.5, with the total sitting at the top of the Week 2 board in the low-to-mid 50s (roughly 52.5-53.5). That combination — a short line and a huge total — reflects two offenses that both looked capable of scoring in bunches in Week 1, and two defenses that both have real questions.

How we got here

Both teams arrive 1-0, but neither win was exactly comfortable.

• Detroit escaped New Orleans in overtime. The Lions nearly blew a big lead, needing the extra period to beat the Saints 31-30. Jahmyr Gibbs was excellent (29 carries, 156 yards, two touchdowns) and Detroit controlled the clock (36:51 time of possession), but the pass defense was exposed — New Orleans piled up 410 through the air, with Chris Olave alone going for nearly 200 yards. The Lions' pass rush did its job (five sacks, two interceptions), but the back end has real issues to sort out fast.
• Buffalo needed a fourth-quarter takeaway to hold off Houston. Josh Allen threw for over 300 yards and accounted for four touchdowns in a 36-31 win over what was the NFL's best defense in 2025, with a stripped fumble on third-and-goal in the final minutes sealing it. The Bills gave up just two sacks and didn't turn the ball over — an encouraging sign for a group learning a new offense under first-year head coach Joe Brady.
• New stadium, new era in Buffalo. This is Highmark Stadium's regular-season debut, and it's also the first Thursday Night Football assignment of Joe Brady's head-coaching tenure. James Cook (last year's rushing champion) and new addition DJ Moore give Allen fresh weapons, while Jim Leonhard takes over as defensive coordinator.

Injuries to watch

Detroit:

• DB Christian Izien has confirmed he should be good to go for Week 2, bolstering the injury hit defensive back room.
• The offensive line seemed to take a battering against the Saints, with RT Blake Miller (Knee) and LG Christian Mahogany (Hip) estimated to be “not practicing” for the Lions walk through on Monday. C Juice Scruggs (Knee) was also estimated to be “limited”.

Buffalo:

• S Cole Bishop left the Houston win briefly with a left knee injury suffered while making a tackle in the second quarter; he was on Monday’s injury report but as “full practice”.
• LB Terrel Bernard, RB Ty Johnson and TJ Sanders were limited in Monday’s practice
• OLB Bradley Chubb and CB Jordan Hancock were listed as full participants on the report.

The basics on Buffalo

Under new head coach Joe Brady, the Bills are coming off a 12-5 season that ended in a Divisional Round exit — a step back from the AFC East titles they'd strung together in previous years. Josh Allen, the 2024 NFL MVP, leads an offense that now features James Cook and DJ Moore as complementary weapons, while Jim Leonhard's defense is the unit to watch as it integrates new pieces after last year's disappointing finish. Buffalo will be looking to make a statement in front of its home crowd in the new stadium's first regular-season outing.
