Lions Inactives: What Izien's Absence and the Stille Elevation Mean for Week 1

Detroit have named their five inactives for this afternoon's opener against the Saints at Ford Field, and while nothing here is a huge shock, there's plenty worth unpacking before kickoff.

The headline is Christian Izien, who was questionable all week with a groin issue and has been ruled out. Given Campbell had described him as "close" and Detroit has a quick Thursday-night turnaround at Buffalo bearing down on them, resting him instead of pushing it feels like the sensible call rather than a surprising one. With Izien unavailable, expect either Roger McCreary or Keith Abney II to slide into the nickel role.

Also inactive is Jimmy Rolder, who's been working his way back from a camp injury. Again, no surprise given his recent absence, but it does mean Malcolm Rodriguez likely steps in as the primary backup at both MIKE and WILL if Detroit need to rotate off their starters.

For Mekhi Wingo, he'd actually progressed to full practice participation by Friday with no game designation attached, so his inactive status looks less like injury management and more like a straight roster decision — and it lines up neatly with Detroit elevating Ben Stille from the practice squad on Saturday. Stille, a versatile veteran who impressed coaches after joining mid-camp, gets the nod for the opener instead, which should open up a bigger interior role today for Skyler Gill-Howard.

For Ennis Rakestraw Jr., he was probably down the pecking order on the depth chart regardless, but it does mean Khalil Dorsey becomes the primary backup outside corner off the bench if McCreary is indeed starting in the slot.

Finally, Ahmed Hassanein being inactive is the name to note here — because it confirms Eric O'Neill has won the battle for a gameday roster spot on the edge. That's a strong sign for the undrafted rookie heading into his first regular-season action.
